WRITING A STORY - WHERE TO START

WRITING A STORY - WHERE TO START

I'm going to write a blog about how I go about writing. Whether it's a 500 word story, or a novel, I tend to start in the same way. I often use an object. If you've read the page - STONE ARROWS - on this website, I explain how, for me, objects spring ideas. Anyone in my writing groups will know that I take the object (in this case the flint flake) and I answer the following questions:

  1. Who owned this flint?
  2. Where was it found?
  3. Why did someone need this flint?
  4. What kind of life did they have and what happened to the person who owned, and possibly made, this flint?
  5. When is my story set?
  6. How was it important to the owner?                                                                                                                  Why don't you have a go? Find an object - animal, vegetable or mineral - and apply these questions. I'll tell you what I do next soon. Meanwhile, find your object and work along with me!
