WRITING A STORY - WHERE TO START
I'm going to write a blog about how I go about writing. Whether it's a 500 word story, or a novel, I tend to start in the same way. I often use an object. If you've read the page - STONE ARROWS - on this website, I explain how, for me, objects spring ideas. Anyone in my writing groups will know that I take the object (in this case the flint flake) and I answer the following questions:
- Who owned this flint?
- Where was it found?
- Why did someone need this flint?
- What kind of life did they have and what happened to the person who owned, and possibly made, this flint?
- When is my story set?
- How was it important to the owner? Why don't you have a go? Find an object - animal, vegetable or mineral - and apply these questions. I'll tell you what I do next soon. Meanwhile, find your object and work along with me!
