SCHOOL VISIT

SCHOOL VISIT

It's inspiring to know that creativity is not dead! During the workshop, the children wrote opening lines to short stories. Over many years, I've taught creative writing to children and adults.  In this short forty-minute class, and after we'd talked about what makes a good 'hook' to your story, I set them the task of writing their opening lines. I couldn't believe the quality of their work! They would have made good openings to any novel or short story. One boy ran up to me as I was leaving and said, 'I'm going to write a book!' You can't ask for more than that as a speaker.

My next visit is a senior school in London with Year Seven and Eight. I'll let you know how that goes.
My secret for a successful talk, especially with children? Use resources like PowerPoint and objects such as the antlers, ask questions, and encourage interaction.
